about

Cave Voices is the final track I completed for the 2012 Global Game Jam and it was written for a platform game called "Orbrs". Of all of the four projects I worked on at the Jam, this game most literally depicted the theme of the event, which was the ouroboros (an ancient image of a snake devouring its own tail, representing the cyclical nature of existence). In this game, a girl wanders through an ancient temple in search of her mother. However, she must avoid an enormous serpentine creature made out of the very stone of the temple. I began sketching ideas for this track around 2am between the second and third day of the jam. Creating nothing of value after an hour, I headed home exhausted and collapsed into a deep sleep. When I woke up on the third and final morning of the game jam, this music was looping over and over in my mind, fully formed. When I arrived at the site to work with my team, I hastily scribbled the notation of each vocal line and set to work recording the piece. I am planning to rework this piece and release a more polished recording, but I also wanted to share this track despite having some "rough edges". I rushed to complete this track so that it could be uploaded to the game before the official ending point of the game jam, and completed my task just under the wire. This work provided useful experience recording, timing, and layering recorded voices into a dense pattern.

lyrics
